Heel Pain

Why Does My Heel Hurt in the Morning? A Podiatrist Explains

Wigley Feet Team July 30, 2026

If your first steps out of bed feel like stepping on a nail, you are not alone. Morning heel pain is one of the most common reasons patients visit our North Miami Beach podiatry office — and in most cases, it is very treatable.

The Usual Suspect: Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, from your heel to your toes. When it becomes irritated or inflamed, the result is plantar fasciitis — a condition that affects roughly 2 million people every year.

The classic sign? Sharp, stabbing heel pain with your first steps in the morning that eases as you move around, then returns after sitting or standing for long periods.

Why Mornings Hurt the Most

While you sleep, your plantar fascia tightens and shortens. When you stand up, it suddenly stretches under your full body weight — and those tiny micro-tears in the tissue make themselves known.

What You Can Do at Home

  • Stretch before you stand. Gently pull your toes toward your shin for 30 seconds before getting out of bed.
  • Wear supportive shoes — even at home. Walking barefoot on tile is one of the biggest aggravators we see in South Florida.
  • Ice the heel for 15 minutes after long periods on your feet.
  • Avoid worn-out sneakers. Shoes lose their support long before they look worn.

When to See a Foot Doctor

If your heel pain lasts more than two weeks despite home care, it is time for a professional evaluation. A podiatrist can confirm the diagnosis, rule out other causes like stress fractures or nerve issues, and offer treatments ranging from custom orthotics to advanced in-office therapies.
